Mingyue finally started raising a pet turtle!

Ever since two grass tortoises that Mingyue had raised for a whole year and woke up from hibernation accidentally fell from the balcony and died N years ago, Mingyue has always wanted to raise turtles again. After all, all kinds of equipment have been purchased, and it is not pleasant to just leave them there to collect dust. Last year, the 50-square-foot fish tank that was purchased on the balcony more than ten years ago was moved indoors. There was only a storage box left, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to build an environment for raising turtles. The filter device, fluorescent lamp, and heating rod are all ready-made, and there is even a full set of longan wood, longan leaves, volcanic rocks, etc.

In order to raise turtles well, I waited from December last year until the beginning of March to place an order for two southern stone turtles (yellow-throated terrapins, 4-5CM in size), as shown in the picture above, one male and one female. Before I received the goods, I couldn’t help but buy 5 2-3CM grass turtle seedlings (as shown below). After all, the storage box is very large, and there are too few turtles, so it is estimated that it is difficult to see them at ordinary times!

What I didn’t expect was that while the goods were still on the way, the temperature in our local area dropped drastically, directly to below 10 degrees. For a moment, I thought that my attempt to buy a turtle might fail again. But when I received the goods, I found that both turtles were in very good condition. They were just not very active due to the low temperature and could only rest indoors.

As the temperature gradually rose, the turtles began to slowly recover their vitality, especially the five grass turtle seedlings, all of which were very healthy. I cleaned up the storage box as quickly as possible and simply decorated it with volcanic rocks, longan wood, longan leaves, and hydroponic calamus to create a storage box version of the turtle tank. After simply setting the water, I put all seven turtles of the two types in at noon when the temperature was suitable.

A week has passed, and the turtles are all healthy, except for the two southern stone turtles who are very shy and often hide under the longan leaves. The five grass turtles spend most of their time drilling in the volcanic rocks, and you can only see them under the fluorescent light. The only drawback is that the storage box is not exposed to natural sunlight, so the turtles can only bask in the sun with the help of fluorescent lights. We can consider improving the position later.

I still remember that the price of the Southern Stone Turtle (Yellow-throated Terrapin) was out of reach, but I didn’t expect the price to drop drastically this year.

Last week, both turtles opened their mouths, and one of them even ate a Gui-seed Medaka. Because it was a new environment, they were basically not fed much. Today, I bought some bait and small fish fry and put them in the turtle tank. Unexpectedly, both big and small turtles came out. Although I didn’t seem to find them catching an entrance after working for a long time, at least I could see them swimming around. It seems that turtles still prefer live food, self-reliance, and having enough food and clothing!

In addition to raising fish, Mingyue also likes raising turtles. Previously, all attempts failed for various reasons. I hope that this time I can continue raising turtles. I have always been a firm supporter of “hibernation” raising turtles. Only such turtles can accompany you healthily. I even bought a hibernation box for turtles. Watching turtles or playing with them in my spare time is also a very pleasant life.
